Ecosomatics of Light
In art, light tells a story. It transforms perspective, identifies shape & distinguishes intensity. Without light, there is no color, yet as I’ve been exploring in watercolor, the absence of color can also absolutely create light. We bring our stories to life through the interplay between light & dark.
In the environment— plants work with light to their advantage for capturing energy, for food, growth & procreation. Animals instinctually bathe in light to regulate themselves, just as plants use their photoreceptors to reach towards it. Like a birch tree reflecting light to protect itself, light is survival. It is the reciprocity between life & land; The cultivation and continuum of a shared primal wisdom.
In our physical body— Light bolsters us. It strengthens immunity, regulates body temperature, hormones, mood, metabolism & circadian rhythm. We are constantly being trained by light to pay attention & sensorially engage with our forever dance partner. When we work with skincare, we’re adding waters & lipids to see light reflected through our skin in the form of well-fed, plump & hydrated cells. Light codes our genetic pathway to resilience & revitalization as it speaks to us through our skin.
In our emotional body— Light is a weightless energy. It is a frequency that charges our spirit; The lightness to have clarity, ease & peace…When someone lets go of suffering, the light comes back to their face…a noticeable shift that can only be rationalized by the relational repair & return of radiance; An inner light being set free. In practices of spirituality around the world, light is the presence of God, and when connected, it can feel seamless to dip into the pool of it during prayer, soulwork & even dreamwork.
Light is the bridge of our worlds. It gives us the perspective to treasure the complimentary nature of the dark, and see value in the unity of our own polarities. From stardust to sun rays, from moonlight to the light of our eyes, the light of the world greets the light within myself & the light within you.
